Message to the Union President

George Gresham,

The fund is threatening employees with prosecution and termination if they participate in this blog.

What ever happened to our right to speak?
Isn't that what our Union fights for?
What would our Union do if management at one of the institutions will threaten our members the same way?

George, we are all waiting to see what you say.

You need us on your side for the rallies, now we need you on our side.

    Supposedly Donna left the board of Ed because she was looking to over throw Joel Klein. She wanted the Chancellor's position. She did not succeed. They eventually found out what her real intentions were and released her from the BOE.

Mitra you hired Dave Tokonow knowing that he had been fired from his previous job for fraudulent behavior, you hired Brandi Shiloh, and that numb nut Helena Denham-Carter whose motto is " I am not here to do work, Iam here to tell people what to do, I do not need to know the plan that's why I have supervisors and managers for!" But Denham-Carter half of the supervisors you hired Althea Stevens-Peerman and Jack Leone do not know what the hell they're doing and they pass probation!!     Three things you don't know about the NBF Finance Department.

    1- we operates without a procedure manual.

    2- We don't file anything.(our files drawers are 95% empty.)

    3- One of the highest paid persons in finance(Cynthia Vaugn) is rumored not to have an accounting degree.

    i work on the floor also and can truly say that they constantly lose peperwork and blame other people. there is no leadership on this floor. cynthia and my sister go to the same church, so i know she is personal friends with donna rey. also the phat non godly pastor trevon is brandy youth minister. hes working on the building fund...making enough money to make the church rise off of 1199 members money.

    In my opinion, George Guz came in from another pension fund and swore he knew everything on 1199. He also came in making more money than the rest of the staff that was in the position he was hired for. He would ask for help and then tell everyone they were wrong. When in fact he was. His work was very sloppy and he felt the need to "write up" everything. The good old days of the pension fund was the best. The morale of that department has dropped dramatically. Also can someone please explain why it is taking over a year to fill one position left by a very good worker? That one position was broken down to 3, first for temps then for permanent worker (who none stayed) and again for temps? Can't find noone that good anymore, that knew their work like that person did???

    Also whatever happened to quality of the work over quantity??? That is why there is such a backlog of work in pension checks going out because unintelligent supervisors (except for one) are pushing for quantity over quality. So for retiring members don't be surprised if it takes almost a year before you get your pension check.

    You were deceitful to us in your email on 12/10. It’s a shame we believed in you. We didn’t think you were like this so shady and dishonest. You sat back and watched as people were getting treated unfairly, terminated and pushed out for no reason at all and did nothing! Donna Rey terminated individuals just for not liking them and Brandy Shiloh would tamper with documents and you were privy to all this. What kind of a person are you? You are spurious to allow this behavior to occur while you did nothing but smile in our faces like all is well. Anything you say now we will have a hard time believing. Can any of you speak any truth at all? This is time for a change maybe you need to step down. You are destroying all your credibility within this organization. Everything that is stated in this statement is 100% TRUE and can be backed up with evidence!

    We may not be the most erudite and refined organization but we do have our morals and integrity and we will no longer tolerate this kind of treatment from upper management at 1199SEIU Family of Funds. We are standing firm on this. We are united.

    Redeployment, Hay Compensation Study, Evaluations, E-Learning, Career Counseling, Degree and experience to get promoted, computer training during your time--all are a joke!!! The bottom line is, it's who you know, who you are sleeping with, and who you kiss ass to. Those are the qualifications needed to get a job or be promoted in the Fund, period!!

    The truth is the redeployment was a help to all of us. No one had to find a new job. If you just take the positive in the action, you can make everything else positive also. You get what you put in at 1199 there are many opporunities available. It is unforunate that we have some "rotten apples" but who among us is pure without fault. Yes, the situations mentioned by everyone shouldn't have occurred, but what will this site do for us. Will it help us move forward or backwards? I think it's awesome if used wisely. Stop posting about things which aren't important. Together we Stand Divided we shall Fall. The previous statement should be deleted it makes no sense.

    I agree with your statement about the redeployment helping many of us remain employed. As far as many opportunities in the Fund, have you ever posted? do you know they test you and the passing score is always arbitrary, in other words contigent solely upon what the hiring department decides. Lets say, you get a 65, if you are not the person they want, they will tell you the passing score is a 68. On the other hand, for many positions, if someone is brought (recommended) from the outside, they would not even be tested. So do you understand? sometimes regardless of what you put in, in 1199 you seldom get what you righly deserve. Ask anyone in IT, HR, Accounting, Elegibility, Pension or even Facilities.

    It is so sad to hear that 1199, the most powerful Union I have ever known is doing the same thing the owners of these nursing homes and hospitals are depicting on their employees. My heart went out to that Nursing Home in the Bronx, name Kingsbridge, and now my heart goes out to my fellow co-workers in the Benefit Fund. I never understood why you guys acted funny to the Union staff but now I understand. What you guys are going through is absolutely embarrassing. Our ancestors died, bleed, and cried for stuff like this to end and it's still going on, right in our camp. My prayer is that George forgets about his favorite baseball team and that hot dog and does something about this. I am a proud Union employee that still believes in protecting the rights of the working class and I hope that we put our mission statement into action, right at home.

    My only suggestion to all those in the benefit fund are to stick to the issues and the facts. I know you guys are angry and this is your avenue to vent but the goal is to get a response for CHANGE. I, like Obama, believe that change is coming but follow his example, use wisdom and stick to the facts. In order to beat “McCain”, you must stay focused.

    This is from another very concerned employee. I have worked for one of the Funds for over 20 years and I hold a high management position with access to Accounting, Executive and HR files. During that time, I have not seen so much disorganization, corruption and deceit, favoritism, and discrimination. I have seen the abuse and ignorance from top management staff first hand.

    I strongly believe in change. As a matter of fact, I am an advocate to change. But when someone abuses the system to get her way and imposes fear among her staff to get respect; then the credibility and premeditated good purpose for that change goes out the window. All odds are against it.

    The Website has been forwarded to the EEO, other equal right opportunity sources, members and providers. It is only a matter of time before any other concerned high ranking official or group of important individuals get involved. It appears we have to go beyond the Union, Trustees and 57th Street Hospital League because it looks as if they do not care about ours and our members concerns for any of these allegations.

    I’m requesting the following facts should be and must be investigated.

    1. If punches are being fixed for Bradley or any other HR staff; then the same punishment should be applied to those who break the rule just as many others have been terminated for these actions. Disciplinary actions up to termination should be sought. All you have to do is question the AA and HR reps. I’m sure they would rather tell the truth than lose their jobs.

    2. If criminal actions were committed by Brandy in the past; then the same punishment should be applied to her just as she terminated many others for having a past criminal record. Termination should be sought. I cannot wait to see those wrongfully terminated sue 1199 for having another criminal terminate them. I am certain the media would love to get a piece of this action.

    3. If favoritism is in place; then it must be stopped, and those who apply it must be punished. Brandy, Donna and Johan must be punished according to their same rules and regulations. No more favorites; no more preferential treatment; no more abuse; no more FEAR.

    4. If hiring preference is being insisted for employees/consultants from the Auburn Technical Services Group; then it must be investigated. Why would Johan (especially him) and Donna prefer these consultants be hired over other consulting agencies and more qualified candidates no questions asked? Is there some type of personal connection? “Just do it is their motto” Ask the HR reps and they would rather tell the truth than lose their jobs.

    5. How do you justify Johan Reyes’ salary? $120K??? He possesses a bachelor’s degree in computers, and has no more than three years of experience in; I guess computer stuff to be leading a new department at the Fund. He acts as if he is another Chief of the Fund. Where is the experience to back it up? Where is the respect for those who are educated and have more seniority like Leo Cole, Kwok Wu, Diana Rodriguez, James Mele and Michelle Agard for example, to lead the way?

    One more thing I would like to mention in regards to salaries is the $20K increase Brandy Shiloh received recently after allegedly using a scare tactic against Donna Rey threatening to leave. Now that we know they are friends, the question is, was it a personal favor or a way to keep her mouth shut? One can only wonder…

    6. Finally, if Mitra is aware or involved to any of the above; she must be immediately removed from her position. If George is aware or involved to any of the above, he must also be immediately removed from his position. The way I see, if the allegations set forth are true, both of them should be immediately removed from their position.

    My concerns have been raised, and I am very certain that someone out there will listen and will do something about it.

    We have all been victims of the injustice perpetrated by the people mentioned above in some way, either directly or inderectly.

    Blogging as whistle-blogging: Fracas at 1199 Family of Funds

    In New York City, a concerned employee of the 1199 Family of Funds has created an anonymous blog entitled What's Happening at 1199SEIU Family of Funds? that calls out two staffers as people who engage in nepotism, practice discrimination, and create an unfair culture. In response to this blog, according to my source, the organization has blocked access to outside email (and is screening mail), has called a meeting to deny the allegations, and is (understandably) trying to figure out who the author is.

    Meanwhile, employees are deeply engaging with the site, posting responses to posts that inquire about age discrimination, questionable and possibly illegal practices, and their right to exercise their free speech with this blog ("The fund is threatening employees with prosecution and termination if they participate in this blog. What ever happened to our right to speak? Isn't that what our Union fights for? What would our Union do if management at one of the institutions will threaten our members the same way?")

    Interestingly enough, if you assume that the 1,800 employees of the 1199 Family of Funds are all aware of this blog--and perhaps 70 of them are posting on it--a picture emerges where some disgruntled employees--whistleblowers?--are using social media to a) air their grievances and b) try to create positive change (which doesn't really seem to be working, does it?)

    If I was a New York based journalist, or the journalism prof at a local J school, I'd jump all over this story, both to better understand what is actually going on at the 1199 Family of Funds and to see if anyone is accountable, and to understand and document how blogging--on blogspot, no less!--is being used as an organizing tool in a non-technical setting.

    Social media, anyone? Wow.

    Thank you for taking a look at our blog and diffusing information about our struggle.

    First of all, allow me to say that every accusation on this blog is based on true facts.

    Contrary to everything the Fund stands for, this new administration is using their position of authority to step all over workers rights. Taking advantage of our current economic times, they threaten employees with termination if they even attempt to be part of this blog. As a long term employee of the Fund, I have been witness to many changes, but I never thought that an organization known for "fighting for workers rights" could engage in implementing such a string of unfair practices and pretend everything is just accusations of one or two disgruntled employees.

    As much as the Fund would like us to terminate the blog, this will not stop. We will continue to keep the blog alive and fight for our fellow employee's rights.

    Blogs are good for folks to voice their feelings, frustrations, etc. Freedom of speech!!
    I use to work at 1199 many years ago and witnessed a lot of stuff that is found in every workplace in the world. Nothing surprising. What was always ugly were the folks who all they did was come to work and start fires. Complain about everything. I observed that these folks were:
    a. Slackers/greedy people. They want to not work a full day and just gossip around, meanwhile they demand things for nothing. Always acting as if the world and management owes them something.
    b. Those that are given a position as a representative (i.e., Darlene and Horace) and immediately they think they can rule the floor and attend every meeting and not be at their desk doing the job they were hired to do. They feel like they have a right to just take advantage of everything.
    c. These folks are the ones with the negative attitudes that folks are always "out to get them" paranoid freaks.
    d. These folks are the ones who are always getting into trouble with their supervisors because they don't do their work right or are always absent.
    c. These same folks are the ones who don't pass the tests to move into a higher position because they don't know the job, study for the test or they are just plain illiterate. I use to review and score these tests, and they were easy multiple choice questions, and many of them had poor grammar or just couldn't read. So management kept changing the questions to make it easier, but they still didn't get it. Like that one blogger wrote that "these folks would not find a job outside of 1199". I'd like to see them try. Maybe McDonalds would take them.
    In all, these folks are just a whole bunch of sour folks that have one hand sticking out always saying "gimme gimme gimme" and don't give anything in return--like performing the jobs they were hired to do! these are the folks that are always getting into trouble and have a lot of personal problems. Then when their supervisor says something to them, oh, it is on.
    Yes, there are bad apples in management too, but these workers and union reps are just as shady and they are not helping the employees out at all. Just making it worse for them.
    One last thing, be grateful that you have a job that pays well, a job that provides you with free health benefits, and a great pension plan (free prescription!). You won't get that anywhere else.
